EMOJIS
I have always enjoyed designing graphic icons, but in recent years I’ve been very lucky to develop that skill and create official emojis for Twitter.
My debut emoji was for none other than Sir Elton John, commissioned by Pan Macmillan to celebrate the release of Elton’s autobiography (we’re on first name terms now obviously). ‘Tiny Elton’ as he’s fondly known, was attached to a selection of hashtags on Twitter as you can see below.
Another Pan Macmillan emoji came in the form of the one and only Mariah Carey (again to celebrate an autobiography release), based on the existing animated character from Mariah’s You Tube channel.
After the success of Tiny Elton, I soon crossed paths with Tim Burgess (frontman of The Charlatans and Tim’s Twitter Listening Parties) and not only started to build an on-going series of Listening Party illustrations, but also got to create Twitter emojis for some of the more epic Listening Party events, first up… Blondie!
The Listening Party was for Blondie’s 1978 classic Parallel Lines (with Debbie Harry and Chris Stein both involved), so we adapted my Cover Version to create the emoji.
Following on from Blondie’s emoji I had the absolute career highlight of creating the Twitter emoji for our lord and saviour, David Bowie. Again working with Tim Burgess (and the David Bowie Estate) for the Listening Party for ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’ falling on the 50th anniversary of the album’s release.
After working with The David Bowie Estate, another dream emoji came along with The Cure using my Cover Version of their album ‘Wish’ as the hashtag emoji, again on Twitter, to celebrate the 30 year rerelease of the album.
